In the dark of the night

In the dark of the night, she could stretch her fragile hands and touch his bare soul

When the sheets curled them and the wind cuddled them

She could look into his eyes and kiss his heart

When the night broke and the dew drops sang with the sunshine

She would search for his soul but could only feel his skin

His eyes would dream of a thousand dreams that had no picture of her in it

His heart would race a thousand miles

And find its beat in beats that had seemed to him so excruciatingly away

In the dark of the night, love came alive

In the dark of the night, in the creases of her baby palms wrapped in the blanket of his

Hopes lost in the creases of the memories came alive

In the dark of the night, the rainbow of her childhood waves came alive

The false promises of a beautiful future with her head bending down to obedience

A future with bountiful happiness and simple love

In exchange of locking her questions and unbound skepticism behind the pages of a scripture

And behind the nodding of the words spoken and dreaming of the words unspoken

Hopes lived

In the dark of the night
